Google Business Profile API access is backlogged: what dealership marketers need to know

Gbp Access Backlog

If your dealership or agency has applied for Google Business Profile API access recently and heard nothing back, you are not being ignored, you are stuck in a queue. Google confirmed in mid September 2026 that Business Profile API access requests are backed up well past the normal 14 day review window, with no firm ETA on when the backlog clears. For multi location dealer groups that depend on API access to manage listings, reviews, and posts at scale, this is a real operational bottleneck, not a minor inconvenience.

What is actually happening

Google Business Profile access is granted at the Google Cloud project level, and the standard review window has always been advertised as 14 days. Local SEO practitioners and dealer groups have been reporting waits of three weeks or more with requests still sitting in progress and no update email. Google’s own support guidance now tells applicants not to submit a second request while the first is pending, since a duplicate application does not speed anything up and can complicate the review. The backlog appears to stem from an increased volume of applications combined with manual security and validation review on Google’s side, which is not something dealer groups or their agencies can influence directly.

Why this matters for multi location dealer groups

Dealerships that manage a single store’s Google Business Profile by hand are largely insulated from this. The pain lands on groups running five, ten, or fifty locations, where manual profile management does not scale and API access is the only realistic way to keep listings, hours, posts, and review responses consistent and current across every store. If your group’s API application is newly submitted or still pending, budget for a longer runway before automation is live, and do not let that gap turn into stale hours, inaccurate inventory links, or slow review responses in the meantime.

The review management piece deserves particular attention. Reputation is one of the highest leverage local ranking and conversion factors a dealership has, and a delay in API access should not translate into a delay in responding to reviews. If your automated response pipeline is not live yet, this is the moment to have a manual backup process in place, even if it is as simple as a shared spreadsheet and a daily fifteen minute review check by store staff.

What to do while you wait

First, do not resubmit. Google is explicit that a second application does not help and may add confusion to the review queue. Second, check your Google Cloud project’s quota page directly rather than waiting on an email, a quota of zero QPM means you are still unapproved, a quota of 300 QPM means you have been cleared even if the notification email has not landed yet. Third, if your dealership group works with an agency or platform vendor for GBP management, ask them directly whether they are affected by this backlog and what their fallback plan looks like for keeping listings accurate manually during the wait.

This is also a good moment to audit whether every location’s profile is fully optimized on the fronts that do not require API access at all: complete category selection, accurate service area settings, current photos, and a steady cadence of Google posts. None of that requires API approval, and dealer groups waiting on access can still make meaningful local SEO progress in the meantime.

Practical takeaways

  • Do not submit a duplicate Business Profile API application if one is already pending, it will not speed up review and may add friction
  • Check your Google Cloud project quota directly to see approval status rather than waiting for a notification email
  • Put a manual backup process in place for review responses and listing updates if your automation depends on pending API access
  • Use the wait productively: audit category accuracy, photos, and posting cadence across every location, none of which requires API approval
