Domain authority just lost its favorite excuse
Two new studies published this week found that Google’s AI Overviews reward the shape of a search query and how directly a page answers it, not the size or authority of the domain publishing it (Search Engine Journal, September 9 2026). For years, smaller dealership websites competing against national third party listing sites assumed they were locked out of top visibility simply because they lacked domain authority. This research says otherwise, and it changes how dealerships should prioritize their SEO effort.
What the studies actually found
The research looked at how AI Overviews select and cite sources, and found that pages structured to directly and specifically answer a query, using clear headers, concise direct answers, and well organized supporting detail, were being surfaced ahead of pages from much larger, more authoritative domains that answered the same question less directly. In other words, a well built page from a single rooftop dealership site can outrank a page from a national auto media outlet if it answers the specific question better.
This is a meaningful departure from a decade of SEO advice that treated domain authority as close to destiny. It suggests Google’s AI systems are evaluating content quality and query match at the page level with less weight given to overall site reputation than many SEO practitioners assumed.
Why this matters more for dealerships than almost any other business type
Dealership websites compete in an unusually lopsided environment. Third party sites like Cars.com, Autotrader, and even manufacturer sites often outrank individual dealer pages for high value searches, in large part because of their sheer scale and backlink profiles. If AI Overviews are genuinely weighting query match and page structure over domain size, that opens a real opportunity for individual dealership sites to win visibility on the exact long tail, high intent questions their local buyers are asking.
Think about searches like “what’s the difference between the 2026 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid” or “how much is a brake job at a Toyota dealership.” These are answerable, specific questions, and a dealership page built to answer them clearly and completely now has a real shot at being the source an AI Overview cites, even against much bigger competitors.
How to restructure your content strategy
Start by identifying the specific, answerable questions your service and sales customers actually ask, not just broad model or category keywords. Pull these from your call center, your chat logs, your CRM notes, and your service advisors directly. These are the exact query shapes AI Overviews are built to satisfy.
Then build pages, or restructure existing ones, around direct answers. Lead with the answer in the first sentence or two, use clear H2 and H3 headers that mirror how a person would phrase the question, and follow with supporting detail. Avoid burying the useful information under paragraphs of brand boilerplate before getting to the point.
Priority actions for your marketing team
- Build an FAQ style content hub answering the specific questions service and sales customers actually ask
- Restructure existing vehicle comparison and service pages to lead with a direct answer, not marketing copy
- Use clear header hierarchy that matches natural language questions
- Track which pages start appearing in AI Overview citations and double down on that structure
- Do not assume a bigger competitor automatically outranks you on specific, well answered queries anymore
The takeaway
For years, dealerships were told to accept a ceiling on organic visibility because they could never match the domain authority of national auto sites. This research suggests that ceiling is lower than assumed, at least in how AI Overviews select sources. The dealerships that win the next phase of search will be the ones building precise, well structured answers to the real questions their customers are asking, not the ones with the biggest backlink profile.
